Default Is noob or n00b supppose to be an insult??

Ok, i've seen it everywhere. "You're a noob" or "You're a n00b." I've even seen "Shut the #%@& up you noob" or "wrong place n00b!!". From what i'm gathering noob (or n00b), is another way of saying newb, which in my tenure of MMO's means "new player" or "newbie". So, what I am asking, is this suppose to be an insult?

If someone were to say , "Shut the %$#& up you n00b." What would be insulting about it? Oh no, you called me a new player, now what am I suppose to do?

I guess my question is this: What makes n00b so insulting, and why are so many people offended by it? I personally can think of many other insulting comments to use other than "noob", "n00b", "newb", or any other way you can use "leet speak" to define a new player.

Please flame away, or post constructive comments, after all, I am a n00b.

For those of you who don't know the term leet speak see the following link:

Newb is someone who is new to whatever it is, and doesn't know what to do blah blah.

Noob is a word for people who DO know what to do, but just.. don't.

And yes, the word noob is very much like the F word for some if not most people who'd use it. Basically, it's (they think) the harshest thing they can come up with. When you converse with people through chat alone, you need to make an impact. They believe noob does this.

I am guilty of this.. when I lose my rag I eff and blind and I have used the word noob.. even though I despise it.

What I despise more though, is people using it out of context.
How to tell if someone's a noob? Well.. did your group just die? Hehe

Your wrong link. NEWB is an affectionate term for someone who is new. N00b is an insult to a person that has done something stupid which makes him look new or is actually new. Noob derives from the term new boy, such as in school.

Google the term noob.

I have never called anyone that by the way.

Alright, here we go! In most FPSes (not quite sure about MMOs), these are the terms used:

n00b: Insulting term for a new person, or a person who is, quite simply, a fool.
noob: Alternate spelling of "n00b". "n00b" is generally considered the proper term, but either is acceptable.
nub: Alternate spelling of "n00b". "n00b" is generally considered the proper term, and using "nub" usually leads to your intelligence being questioned.
newb: A new person. No insult implied; all that is stated is that the player in question is new to the game.

Yes, I do have too much free time.

Noob is from newbie, not new boy. Newbie may itself be from new boy, but... I don't think so. A newbie's just someone who is new at something. That's where newb comes from-- newbie abbreviated. Noob/n00b are distortions of newb, I guess, that are now used as insults by... um... internet dorks.

I personally think it's all pretty stupid. I just call someone a stupid ****er if I'm pissed at 'em. That gets the point across.

I used these terms for a while back in D2 and some of the FPSs I have played afterwards, but I find that using them in GuildWars makes you, the one using them, look like a moron.

From what I can recall, I was one of the first, if not the first, person to use the word "nub". It is only to be used in the extreme case that the person sucks so much that they do not even deserve to be called a "noob" or "n00b". If you add on the suffix "let", it means little. Example: "newblet" would mean a small child that is new to the game.

I prefer using the words "asshat" or "phucktard" with an "F" instead of the "ph".
